Like the changing temperature in Utah, Skymail saw it fit to make a few changes of its own. If you’ve been up in the front offices recently, you may have noticed a bit of a facelift. Well, a huge facelift. And if you ask around, I don’t think anyone would disagree that it was well deserved and well needed. The carpet was once a shade of blue if you can believe that. The walls were beaten and battered with numerous holes, scratches, dings, dents, marks, and mouse houses. The colors were outdated and drab – way too 90’s. Skymail needed some spunk to bring it into this century. After what seemed like months of deliberation, the big wigs up top decided a change would be worth it.

A change like this can do a lot for a company. It can pick up moral, giving its employees a change of scenery. It even gave employees a chance to clean out all the junk we’ve accumulated (I swear I was throwing away sales orders from 2002). It’s always a good feeling when taking the time to clean out the old to make way for the new. It’s incredible how you can put something off for so long, dreading to do it, and when time is set aside to do it, it takes no time at all. That’s the thing with procrastination; our minds tend to make mountains out of molehills. Once we get the ball is rolling, it’s hard to stop, making it easier and easier to accomplish tasks. The gentle push of that ball turned the offices of Skymail into a whirl-wind for a month. Fortunately, the employees of Skymail were not swept away with it, everyone stepped up big time and did their part!

Arranging and rearranging desks, cabinets, and chairs were just part of the typical workday during renovations. There were some complaints, but most employees were unbothered by all the commotion. For those unaware, the beautiful new vinyl floors and baseboards were all installed in-house by Skymail employees. The ability to juggle their daily job and the installation of over 8,000 square feet is a testament to the work ethic at Skymail. Matt O’Connor, Mike Jones, Max Anderson, Dean Rogers, Travis Eggli, and Brandon Peterson were the spearheads for this operation. With a little help from “Alexa” for the tunes, these men inserted, piece by piece, plank by plank, every inch of the floor. Of course, that was the easy part.

With the floor finished, the next and toughest step was deciding what paint to choose to rejuvenate the ancient walls. You can’t have a brand-new floor and stick with the same paint job. So, of course, a color needed to be chosen that could complement the floor and make everyone happy. And my goodness, so many different colors to choose. Cloudy Day, Bucolic Blue, Sonata, Spring Storm, Frost Wind, the different shades are practically endless. After going back and forth between several different blues and grays for weeks, Skymail was on the brink of an all-out war until a victorious color finally emerged. The stress of choosing the perfect color was enough for the Skymail crew, so they were happy to allow an outside source to take over for the actual painting. After about seven days worth of enduring the noxious fumes while the painters worked, the walls came out pristine. The floor and walls were done, and the office was coming together nicely.

Now, it’s the little things that are left to be put in place. The things that tie the office together and give it that ‘Skymail’ moxie. Logos, desks, tables, chairs, pictures, shelves, etc. These types of furnishings are what make a house a home and what will make this office Skymail. The finishing touches will never be 100% complete as there will always be ways to make these offices more functional or add something that’s just plain cool. The foundation of the floor and walls are complete, and now we slowly add, giving the office its new identity.

The managers at Skymail want to thank every employee during this process. We all were affected in one way or another, and work continued as usual. This wasn’t the first big project and won’t be the last. Due to the culture here at Skymail we can complete major in-house projects and not worry about halting Skymail’s business.
